4.0 mm (G USA, 7 UK) Crochet Hook
Aran (4, Medium) Cotton Yarn in colors: color A (A) and color B (B).
Tapestry Needle
YARN
I used Lily Sugar and Cream yarn, 100% cotton
Color A – White – ~ 2.5 oz / 70 g
Color B – Red – ~ 1.25 oz / 35 g
Yarn Substitutions
Any Aran yarn
FINISHED SIZE
9.0โ (22 cm) by 9.5โ (24 cm)
GAUGE
16 sc x 14 rows = 4โ (10 cm) worked in tapestry crochet
STITCH ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
stdc – standing double crochet – attach yarn to your hook with a slip knot then work double crochet as normal
stsc – standing single crochet – attach yarn to your hook with a slip knot then work single crochet as normal
PATTERN NOTES
The pattern is written in 2 sections.
The Placemat is worked in rows, the Border in rounds.
The placemat is worked entirely in sc.
If the pattern says โ(A) 7โ, it means that you need to sc in each of the next 7 sts using color A.
At the end of each row, ch 1 and turn.
The initial ch 1 does NOT count as a st.
With the exception of the border, the stitch count is always 30 sts.

BORDER
After row 30, both A and B are at the right, top corner of your potholder (if you are right-handed, or the left corner if you are left-handed). Fasten off B.
With Color A, ch 1, and turn.
Round 1. Start crocheting along the top side of the placemat.
Top Side: sc 30, ch 1 at the corner, start working on the next side.
Left Side: sc 30 on the left side, ch 1 at the corner.
Bottom Side: sc 30 on the bottom, ch 1 at the corner.
Right Side: sc 30 on the right side of the potholder, ch 1 at the corner. Join the round with a sl st into the first st.
(30 sts on top and bottom, 30 sts on left and right sides, 1 ch at each corner).
Fasten off.
With Color B
Rnd 2: stdc in any corner, dc in same st, *dc in each st until corner, [2 dc, ch, 2 dc] in corner* 3 times, dc in each st until corner, [2 dc, ch] at first corner, sl st in first dc. Fasten off. (34 sts on top and bottom, 34 sts on left and right sides, 1 ch at each corner).
With Color A
Rnd 3: stsc in any corner, *sc in each st until corner, [sc, ch, sc] in corner* 3 times, sc in each st until corner, [sc, ch] at first corner, sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (36 sts on top and bottom, 36 sts on left and right sides, 1 ch at each corner).
Weave in all your ends.
